The Word and The Whisper

So what is the Lord speaking into your heart today?  Elijah heard a Strong Wind, the Rumbling of an Earthquake, the Roaring of a Fire...and then God spoke in a Still Small Voice. Jesus said "My Sheep hear My Voice."  We are told that the Word of God is Quick and Powerful, Sharper than a Double-Edged sword!  It cuts to the heart! We are to study to show ourselves approved, good workmen of God.  So again, what is God Speaking to you?  What is His Word Saying?  What is He Whispering in the quiet depths of your heart?  Share it here with the rest of us....

BLOG ENTRY #6: MAY 5, 2022

"Be A Proclaimer!"

Preaching God's Word is not a presentation!  It is a declaration of the truth about God: Who He is, What He has done in the World and What He is yet to do!  Preachers are called to be Proclaimers of these things, not Communicators!  A Communicator seeks to persuade, inform and instruct their audience. Preaching is different! There is no other form of address like it!  In spite of all the changes in our world, multitudes still gather weekly across the world to hear what a Proclaimer has to say about God, based upon their understanding of His Word.

The Apostle Paul says it like this: "I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the Word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry." (II Timothy 4:1-5) This charge still resonates!

PREACH THE WORD!  This is our calling! No one chooses this weighted glory for themselves!  Paul stated, "...God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles." (II Timothy 1:9-11).  Paul realized that he was involved in something much larger than his own personal fulfillment.  This was eternal business!

The Old Testament Prophet Amos shared his own calling: “I was no prophet, nor was I a son of a prophet, But I was a sheep-breeder, and a tender of sycamore fruit. Then the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’"(Amos 7:14-15). Amos recognized this huge responsibility placed upon him. He had a divinely-imparted passion for the task and a burden for his listeners.

Jeremiah the Prophet tried to escape the weight of his calling. He said, "O Lord, You induced me, and I was persuaded; You are stronger than I, and have prevailed....Because the word of the Lord was made to me a reproach and a derision daily. Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name.” But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not." (Jeremiah 20:7-11) Jeremiah was known for weeping as he proclaimed the message of God to a stubborn resistant people! He was not well-received. He was not respected or loved by the majority of his hearers. He didn't want to share what God had said!  But he could not keep himself from doing it!  He was compelled by the Lord!

This task is not for the faint of heart! We are not sharing our own message! If Jesus was present in the flesh, He would be preaching.  But in His fleshly absence, He instructs us to speak on His behalf.  Thus, it does not matter what the Proclaimer thinks. Their opinion about God's Word and Words is not paramount!  What the audience thinks, or how they respond, is not the ultimate concern of the Proclaimer. The key question is: "What does God think?"  Has the Proclaimer been faithful in delivering the Message?

The Lord is weary of His Spokesmen seeking to be clever, witty, respected, quoted, tweeted and followed.  He is looking for something much deeper.  He calls His Proclaimers to stop trying to make the Word of God Relevant! It is already Relevant! It is inherently so because it is the Word of God!

Proclaimers are handling highly volatile explosives, not water balloons!  Those conscripted to this High and Holy Calling must recognize the Sacred Trust imparted to us!  PROCLAIMERS WILL GIVE AN ACCOUNT.    Paul admonishes Timothy (and all who follow in his steps): "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (II Timothy 2:15). This is what it means to Proclaim the Word of God.  Let us be diligent in doing so for His Glory!

Key Element #1 in Preaching:  Be A Proclaimer!

BLOG ENTRY #5:  May 2, 2022

I'm writing today to introduce one  of my favorite subjects: "The Priority of Preaching!"

There is so much to say about this crucial topic, and yet it is seldom addressed by pastors with their congregations.

I'm advocating for the need to:

Pastors must convince their congregations about the Value of Preaching in

two important ways:

               1) Preach about Preaching itself, because our people seldom realize what they have lost or have never received!  We need to stir up a hunger for it by sharing from the Scriptures examples of when and how it was done with excellence!

Most of our people have lived without God-ordained, Spirit-led, passionate coals of fire from the Throne for so long that they don't

know it's missing!  They will be in that condition until they actually experience it again! Then they will refuse to be content without it!

2) Therefore, it is imperative to Preach with such power and passion that its impact upon their lives becomes undeniable!

Our current challenge is:

Preaching is often seen as something negative by the contemporary world:

"Don't preach at me!" carries a lot of weight in our culture.

Consequently, many pastors have pulled back from true Biblical preaching, instead delivering historical Biblical lectures or

conducting group therapy sessions from the pulpit!

We must recognize there has always been a natural resistance to Godly Preaching!

It is a Word FROM God from the Word OF God

It strikes at the heart and pride of the secular person in a sometimes offensive way.

The preaching of the Cross has always been an offense!

Hear the words of the Apostle Paul about this in

I Corinthians 1:17-25:

"For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,

And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom;

23 but we preach Christ crucified,

to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks,

Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God

25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men."

There will always be those who see the Preaching of Christ as Foolishness, as a Stumbling Block, as a Subject for Dispute, as an Offense.  These things must not stop us from Preaching the Word!

This is the call!

Paul did not come to baptize, to cast vision, to start programs, to oversee budgets, to lead small groups, to do counseling or to direct the children's ministry: he came to Preach the Gospel!  All other activities and responsibilities overseen by Pastors today have their place.

But that place MUST BE SECONDARY!

Nothing can replace the distinct calling of a pastor to their flock

There is so much more to say!

Over the next number of blogs, I will be addressing this subject through 10 Key Elements about Preaching that must be imparted if our pulpits  are to regain their vital impact on the Church, the Community and the World.

Blog Entry #4

April 1, 2022  The Mission In Action

Back to The Question in Blog #1: So what does *Our Mission* look like in real life? How do we "LOVE GOD, CONNECT WITH PEOPLE, SERVE THE WORLD?). I'm glad you asked!  Here's what I've learned as I discuss these things with various Cape Coders.

First, this is a place with a rich religious heritage! The Great Awakening happened here! Preachers like George Whitefield, D. L. Moody, Jonathon Edwards and others faithfully brought God's Word and stirred hearts.  But now we are in rocky spiritual soil with little current spiritual vitality. God needs to move in a fresh way upon this Pilgrim soil!

Many folks here don't attend church services, but are not always open to meetings in homes to discuss spiritual things either.  So how can we fulfill our Mission?  We are planning Three Simple Steps that we believe will touch lives!

Step One: Preach the Word and Gather People.  We are starting with a "Preaching Point".  This starts with meeting each week on Zoom for Worship, Preaching and Prayer.  Our worship is Vertical, not Horizontal. It is focused on Christ, not our personal experiences!  The first Sermon Series is on the Book of Colossians: Let's unpack what God says about Christ and How we are to live in an expository verse-by-verse series!  We believe there is an untapped spiritual hunger in many, but they must have clear answers in a non-threatening environment.  In these on-line gatherings, we will emphasize God's love for us and how to best love Him. We are also exploring where to begin in-person gatherings for Worship and the ministry of the Word. (LOVE GOD)

Step Two: Zoom Bible Studies.  We believe people need to connect with each other.  They are often more willing to do so when they have begun new relationships. In our on-line Bible study groups, we discuss how the Bible applies to today's life, starting in the book of Nehemiah about Rebuilding Fallen Walls.  As this group develops, a deeply committed Core Group will be formed.  They will help expand the ministry of our church further into the community. Home groups will be launched as things unfold. (CONNECT WITH PEOPLE)

Step Three: Touch The Community.  As our passion for Christ grows, so will the desire to impact the lives of others. Some points of contact with the community include visiting the homes of new arrivals to Cape Cod (125+ move-ins since October 2021!).  We are also meeting our neighbors and connecting with local businesses, offering invitations to our church and prayer for their needs. We are in the process of launching ministries on the Cape in places like: The Bourne Manor Care Facility, The Coast Guard & Joint Military Base,  The Maritime Academy and Local Bourne Schools as well as the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Homes.  Contacts have been made and opportunities are being launched/discussed regarding next steps.  (SERVE THE WORLD)

Our approach is different than the "normal way you plant a church." But we believe that many are seeking God, want genuine relationships with people, and

are open to someone showing they care in practical and unusual ways.  If you agree: Pray for us every day!  And if you live on the Cape: Come join us in our Mission!

Blog Entry #3

Much of what a Pastor does is observed and critically evaluated by their congregation and community. But who they are in their private life will determine the long-term effectiveness of their External ministry. This is their indispensable INTERNAL FOCUS. The Key Question: Do they have a "Secret History" with God? This is practiced in 4 ways:

PRAYER: Does the Pastor spend time in Prayer, seeking God's will for their own lives, for the church as a whole, and for individual members and their needs? They will especially need to be Praying for their Preaching, which cannot be taken for granted!

What kind of Praying do they do? "Praying from the Head" involves reciting a litany of needs and requests, informing God to remember and answer all their prayers. "Praying from the Heart" is a much different matter. It means sharing the depths of emotions and concerns with the Lord as their most trusted friend, without regard for "making it sound good." It's raw and unpredictable, but it is the kind of Praying that changes the world!

PREACHING: Contrary to popular belief, this is actually an Internal Work that spills into the External Realm. Preaching is the most important work a Pastor does. It is their opportunity to speak to the largest number of people under their care every week. Everything flows from their Preaching!

If the Pastor has not spent significant time reading and studying the Bible; reading, researching and exploring other books; then thinking, meditating, and writing down their thoughts for clarity; they will eventually end up preaching the same sermon every week, just with a different text and title! It takes time in "God's Kitchen" to prepare the feast God's people need when they arrive hungry at the worship event. There is no substitute for this private element of deep time spent with God and His Word. Blessed indeed is the congregation who benefits from a well-prepared weekly meal from a prayed-up Pastor!  Long-term Pastor Alistair Begg urges: "Read Yourself Full. Think Yourself Empty. Write Yourself Clear. Pray Yourself Hot!" Good counsel for every Preacher!

PREPARATION: This key Internal Element cannot be overemphasized. It is the sad mantra of an undisciplined, disorganized and even lazy pastor who makes the excuse, "I'm not preparing anything in advance. I'm just waiting for the Holy Spirit to lead me!"  What if the Creator and Manager of our Universe operated with that attitude?  Planning in advance for Kingdom work makes a statement about how much we value it! No bride leaves the wedding planning until the last minute!

Similarly, when a Pastor plans for Sermons, Leadership Training, Casting and Pursuing a Vision, Teaching Bible Studies, or Organizing Ministries and Outreaches to the Community, they are saying "THESE THINGS MATTER." There must always be room to adjust, change or remove plans and ideas as the Lord leads, but Preparation is key to ensuring God has been given "room to work" in every situation!  Without Preparation, it is easy to revert to what is routine, comfortable and predictable, because it is familiar! PREPARE AND THEN RELEASE IT TO GOD!

PEOPLE:  They are a Pastor's greatest resource and also the source of his greatest challenges! People are meant to be loved and cared for in a genuine, healing way.  They are never to be seen as merely an audience, a nuisance or as a "means to an end".  They are not to be used to satisfy the pastor's ego, their need for power or any desire to feel significant. This means the Pastor must be a spiritually and emotionally mature person who draws their value from the Lord.  This allows them to give of themselves without manipulating others for their own self-aggrandizement. Jesus never used people, but sacrificially gave and ministered to them.  Everyone who ever came into contact with Him went away a better person. If that did not happen, it was due to their own hardness of heart, not any mistreatment from Him! Likewise, a true "Shepherd of the Sheep" is always looking to the best interests of their flock. When the people know their Shepherd's character, it is much easier for them to follow with a willing and joyful heart!

In these 4 Key Areas: Prayer, Preaching, Preparation and People, the fruitfulness of the Pastor's ministry is ultimately decided. If they are faithful in these Internal endeavors, they will assuredly make a significant and lasting impact on the lives of those under their charge. Pray for your Pastor that these things would always be of utmost importance in their ministry!

Our Second Blog Entry

Why are we spending time talking about Pastors as we start a new church? It's because the Pastor is a focal point of any congregation! They are the representative of the Lord to the local church. Many people will become involved and grow spiritually;  or stagnate and leave the church based upon the Preaching, Leadership and Actions of a Local Pastor.

So what does a Pastor Really do? Over the years, many have sought to answer that question.  Some have said (perhaps joking?) that Pastors only work one day a week, or that they "play a lot of golf!"  Most folks don't get to spend a week with their pastor on their routines, so it can seem like what they do could be accomplished in a few hours weekly. Having been a pastor for many years, let me share some insights about "What a Pastor Really Does."  In the next 2 Blogs, we will be exploring an effective Pastor's "EXTERNAL FOCUS" and "INTERNAL FOCUS".

Much of what they do EXTERNALLY may take place behind the scenes, like:

Casting Vision; Training Leaders & Volunteers; Overseeing Staff & Ministries; Counseling & Comforting Families; Connecting with & Assimilating Newcomers; and Administering Church Budgets, Properties, Personnel & Finances.

There are also more obvious External activities, like Conducting Weddings, Funerals, Communion & Special Services; Teaching Bible Studies, Classes, Seminars & Conferences;  Passionately Preaching interesting Sermons at least 40 times per year; Leading the church in Worship; and Praying for lost, sick, hurting, and needy people both publicly and privately...

Let's sum up the EXTERNAL FOCUS of the Pastor's Job this way:

They are to INSPIRE, CHALLENGE, ENCOURAGE and EQUIP God's People for Works of Service!

We are to INSPIRE you to be more than you believed you could be, because of the power of the Holy Spirit working inside of you!

We are to CHALLENGE you to greater depths of Biblical and Theological understanding, calling you to greater heights in your spiritual growth!

We are to ENCOURAGE you to remain faithful during the difficult times of suffering and loss, teaching you that God will bring you through victoriously as you trust Him!

And we are charged to EQUIP you with spiritual understanding of your calling, gifts and abilities so you can serve others as a key member of the Body of Christ.

We do all these things with great joy and sober reflection, believing we are making a significant difference in your life. We know we must give an account to the Lord at the Last Day, when He judges and evaluates our work as one of His leaders in His Church.  It is not an assignment to be taken lightly! No one can choose it for themselves! It is the High Calling of God to be The Leader of His People, The Prophet of His Word, and The Shepherd of His Flock!

So when you think of your Pastor....pray for them!  If I am your pastor, please lift me up in your prayers today, that I may finish the race well and hear the words: "Well Done, good and faithful servant!"

Our First Blog Entry

March 11, 2022

So "What is Our Mission?" :"To LOVE GOD, CONNECT with PEOPLE, SERVE the WORLD." But you ask: "What does that look like in real life?" Shauna Pilgreen puts it this way in her book "Love Where You Live."

"So Alan and Gwen took this one life they had been given, this one faith they had in God, this one vibrant heart for their community, and their individual and unique giftedness to be on Mission with Him." But that still doesn't answer the question: "What is our Mission?"

What is the Over-Arching "Missio Dei" (Mission of God)? It is for the Church to be "On Mission." Let's use three similar words to explain it from "Planting Missional Churches" by Ed Stetzer. To "Be On Mission" means we are pursuing:

The Mission: Fulfilling The Intended Goal or Purpose (Why We Exist: as a Church/Person).

Doing Missions: Sharing and Showing the Gospel of Christ (The "Good News" that Jesus came, lived, loved, died and rose again for us!) to all corners of the earth (What We Do as Christians, individually and as a Church).

Being Missional: Adopting the lifestyle of a Missionary, joining Jesus on Mission, learning and adapting to the culture around us while remaining Biblically sound (How We Do It).

So at Morning Star Outreach Center, we are "On Mission" to complete "The Mission", sharing the love of Christ with everyone we meet ("Doing Missions"). We do this as we live a "Missional Life" as Missionaries in our own culture on Cape Cod and The Islands!

It's not crazy and it's not impossible, but it's also not common! Most of us live for our own purposes and pleasures.  But God calls us: "Fulfill My Mission!" Will you join Him?  Will you come and join us as we seek to change the world for Jesus Christ?
